Tough courses getting to you?

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a nontraditional form of tutoring that focuses on collaboration, group study, and interaction for assisting students in undertaking "traditionally difficult" courses.

With SI, it’s all about insider information. SI sessions are led by students who’ve successfully completed your course — with the same professor. Simply put: they’ve been there.

SI can also help improve:

  • Study strategies and time management
  • Unique note taking and memory aids
  • Anticipating test questions
  • Vocabulary development

FAQs

Who should attend SI?

Everyone in a course that offers SI! It’s help for hard courses, not struggling students, so don’t be afraid to stop by.

Do I have to go to SI?

Nope, it’s up to you, but most students recommend getting in the habit—like it’s a required course. Hour-long sessions are offered 2-3 times a week and you can come as often as you’d like. And if you need more help, swing by the SI leader’s weekly office hours.

Is SI offered for my course?

SI is currently offered for CHEM 100, CHEM 105, and CHEM 141 courses. Course offerings will be expanded in future semesters, so check back for updates and to see if your class is on the list!

What happens during an SI session?

SI sessions are regularly-scheduled, informal reviews where students have the opportunity to:

  • Compare notes
  • Discuss readings
  • Get organized
  • Predict test items

It’s a great way to brush up on course content, so visit the ARC (1st floor, Zimmerman Library) to grab a schedule of dates, locations and times for available SI sessions.
